As a member of the “European Hiking Hotels” we offer highest standards; a guided “Vital”-programme and a supporting programme, as well as all the amenities you could possibly need for a successful hiking holiday in the Bavarian Forest.
Drachselsried – Poschinger Hütte a Family Tour
An easy half-day tour as a warm-up for your holidays. Take hiking trail no. 1 or 3 from Drachselsried toward Ebene, continuing from there on the blue no. 3 along the Forellenbach to the Restaurant Poschinger Hütte (one-way distance ca. 3 km). There you have an opportunity to stop for a bite to eat (closed on Wednesdays). One of the most beautiful tours in these parts.
To Schareben and the Hochstein a Family Tour
From Drachselsried you hike along trail no. 4 via Ebene or trail no. 5 via Blachendorf to Schareben (7 km, ca. 2 hours). Here an old forester’s lodge invites you to stop in. An ample children’s forest playground and a Kneipp cure basin make for an entertaining rest. From Schareben, you can take the loop hiking trail no. 11 to the Hochstein (ca. 3 km, 1 hour). The Hochstein peak features a marvellous panorama view of the Zellertal. By the way, during summer season, the road to Schareben (via Oberried and Schönbach) is also driveable by car.
Drachselsried – Frath – Asbach
Heading out past the camping site Haufenmühle you cross the state road and follow the blazes for hiking trail no. 6 (blue) in the direction of Grafenried. Here you turn right into the forest and head toward to Frath-Knögerl (Füllsender) and continue on to Frath. The Gutsgasthof Frath (closed on Mondays) offers an opportunity to stop for Bavarian delicacies or a hearty snack. Continue along the hiking trail no. 12 to Asbach. Here, too, you have the opportunity to stop at the Berggasthof Fritz, known for its good kitchen. One-way distance ca. 7 km, ca. 2 ½ hours.
Zellertal Circular Hiking Trail (Blaze “Z”)
This loop hiking trail encompasses the entire Drachelsried municipality, and leads through marvellous forest areas. Total length: 28 km. For this tour there is even a specific hiking badge available; you can buy the respective hiking “passport” and tour guide as well as the hiking badge at the Tourist Info.
Drachselsried – Kötzinger Hütte
By car, you drive via Arnbruck to the Berggasthof Eck at 843 metres altitude (distance 12 km). From there, a challenging hiking tour with Alpine character leads across the Großer Riedelstein (1132 m), the Rauchröhren (rock cliff formations), and the Steinbühler Gesenke (1044 m) to the Mittagsstein – with a marvellous panorama view. You have the opportunity to stop by at the Kötzinger Hütte. It is possible to return via Hudlach (a steep descent), Eschlsaign and further along the forest road, back to Eck. Day trip, ca. 20 km.
Drachselsried – Zwieseler Waldhaus – Schwellhäusl a Family Tour
By car, you drive in the direction of Bayerisch Eisenstein. 1.5 km behind Ludwigsthal, at the railway bridge, turn right toward the Zwieseler Waldhaus. From the parking lot Brechhäuselau starts the loop hiking trail “Schwarzstorch” – “Black Stork” – via the Schwellsteig to the Schwellhäusl, an ancient forest inn. Its rustic parlour, beautiful beer garden and children’s playground invite you to take a comfortable break. Further past the Hans-Watzlik-Hain, the trail leads back to the parking lot Brechhäuselau. Total walking time ca. 1 ¼ hours. Return by car via Bayerisch-Eisenstein – Großer Arbersee – Bodenmais (one-way distance ca. 32 km).
Drachselsried – Großer Arber – Silberberg near Bodenmais a Family Tour
With its 1456 metres altitude, the Großer Arber dominates the Bavarian Forest. By car, you drive past Bodenmais in the direction of Regen. Following the rotary intersection near Bodenmais, the by-pass road turns left after ca. 3 km toward the Arber region and Bayerisch Eisenstein. Passing the Großer Arbersee, you reach the valley station of the cable car after ca. 20 km. Spanning a distance of 960-metres, the modern 6-person-gondola transports you to the top within a few minutes. A loop hiking trail (ca. 1 hour) starts from the mountain station and offers a fantastic panorama view. You have the opportunity to stop at the Arberschutzhaus, or the Bergstüberl. On your way back, there is enough time to visit the historic mine at the Silberberg near Bodenmais. Via the 600-metres long “Barbarastollen”, the path leads you deep into the core of the Silberberg. You will see imposing machines and conveyor ducts at work. You then take the chairlift to the middle station and from there a trail leads to the mine visitor centre and to the Bergmann-Schänke. After visiting the mine, you may return to the valley station via the 600 metres long summer toboggan run, by chairlift or by foot. There, the Silbergalm with beer garden, children’s playground and petting zoo invites you for a break.
The Queen of Tours in the Bavarian Forest – for Trained Hikers
“Eight 1000 metre peaks in one day”
To reach the start of this ridge hiking tour that follows the E6 “Baltic Sea – Wachau – Adriatic Sea” long-distance hiking trail, you drive by car to the trailhead at the Berggasthof Eck at 843 metres altitude. A shuttle bus to Eck is also available for hikers from July through October. From Eck, the trail heads upward and eastward; after ca. 45 minutes you reach the Mühlriegel – with its 1080 metres your first “1000-metre summit”. After a 100 metres descent, continue along the left path, which leads to the north-east with some steep ascents until you reach the Ödriegel (1156 m). The trail continues along the ridge at about 1100 metres altitude to the Waldwiesmarterl, a resting place with a cross on the summit (1139 m). The trail ascends steeply until reaching the next 1000-metre summit, the Schwarzeck (1238). The rocky ridge has an almost Alpine character and features a marvellous view of the Lamer Winkel and the imposing Ossermassiv with its two peaks.
A steep descent to the Reischflecksattel, a clearing at 1142 metres, follows. Then a steep path through a forest cutting leads up to the Heugstatt, an elevated moss plateau at 1261 metres altitude. The ridge trail goes on past the Enzian at 1285 metres to the Kleiner Arber (1384 m). After a short descent, you reach the Chamer Hütte. Eastwards, the trail leads on to the Großer Arber (1456 m). The Arber summit is accessible either via the steep and rocky “Himmelsleiter”, or the more comfortable trail through the Bodenmaiser Mulde.
The Großer Arber, with its 1456 metres altitude the highest peak in the Bavarian Forest, is divided into four rock formations: One above the main summit refuge with a cross upon it, the Große Seeriegel at the Arber chapel, the Richard-Wagner-Kopf to the south-west and the Kleiner Seeriegel to the west. An impressive panorama view is available from any of these points.
From the summit, you descend to the mountain station of the Arber cable car and to the Arber lodge, which features an opportunity to stop for bite. Via the “Smuggler Path”, down the Arber north slope, past the lodge of the Laner mountain rescue service and the Sonnenfelsen, you reach the Brennes after only a 60 minute descent. From Brennes, there is a public bus to Bodenmais, with an opportunity to transfer to Drachselsried. Total walking time: ca. 6 to 7 hours. A shorter version of the tour leads from the Reischflecksattel via the hiking trail no. 10 to Schareben (opportunity for a break at the mountain inn). From Schareben, you take the hiking trail no. 4 or 5 back to Drachselsried. Total walking time: ca. 4 hours.
