Our Excursion Tips for your Holidays in the Bavarian Forest

There is a lot to be discovered in and around the Bavarian Forest. Exciting excursions and cultural sites are waiting for you and your family. We have selected the most beautiful places for you; and we are looking forward to assisting you in making your choice and planning your excursion.

Pullman City, the Bavarian Western City

An area of 200,000 m2, which makes cowboys’ and Indians’ hearts beat faster. Experience a time machine trip back into the history of the Wild West. The western city, Pullman City, with a varied show programme, numerous attractions and a close-up nature and animal experience, features entertainment for grown-ups and kids alike.

Passau, the “Three Rivers City” in Bavaria

Passau, the “Three Rivers City”, is a city of superlatives. The Passau Cathedral houses the world’s largest church organ; and the flair of the youthful historic old-town has enchanted many a visitor. The Passau “Three Rivers Corner” is worldwide the only place where three rivers from different origins merge into one single river.

The Bohemian Forest and the Großer Arber

The Bohemian Forest (the Czech name for the Bohemian forest is Sumava) is an approximately 200 km long mountain ridge along the German-Czech-Austrian border. The Großer Arber on the Bavarian side, with its 1456 m, is the highest elevation in the Central German Uplands; a beautiful area with an almost infinite number of hiking trails and numerous opportunities for sports and exercise.

The Celtic Settlement Gabreta in the Bavarian Forest

The Celtic Settlement Gabreta invites parents and their children to take a journey back into the times of the Celts. At the Celtic Settlement Gabreta, families may closely experience the bygone, Celtic ways of living.

The Sumava Bohemian Forest National Park

The vast mountain regions of the Sumava National Park in the Bohemian Forest, extending along the south-western border of the Czech Republic bordering Germany and Austria, were designated as a national park in 1991. The Sumava national park, with its 69,030 hectares, is the largest national park in the Czech Republic.

Joska Crystal Adventure Glass in Bodenmais in the Bavarian Forest

The glass Joska Crystal Adventure World invites to wonder at and to participate in. It offers a sparkling “adventure world”, and with almost one million visitors, it is one of Bavaria’s top excursion destinations. Glass blowers demonstrate traditional fabrication techniques using the melting furnace; and whoever feels like it, has the opportunity to blow his own glass ball.

Museum Village Bavarian Forest near Tittling

A stroll through the museum village Bavarian Forest is like a trip into the history of the Bavarian Forest. Marvellous, ancient farmhouses from the 17th to the 19th century, ancient chapels, mills, saws, colourful farm gardens and ancient house terraces are awaiting you.

Krummau – the Historic Czech City

Krummau on the Moldau is a regional center in the Bohemian Forest (CZ), with 14,000 inhabitants, located in the Southern Bohemian District. The historic relevance and tourist significance of Krummau can be appreciated by considering the fact that it is ranked second on the UNESCO list of European monuments worth protecting.

Linz – Austrian Cultural Capital 2009

There is a lot going on in the provincial capital of Upper Austria, ca. 2 driving hours from Drachselsried. Apart from a broad and varied range of cultural events and institutions, Linz features numerous places of interest worth visiting. In 2009, Linz is especially well worth seeing (and listening to), as it will be serving as the European Cultural Capital City.

Vltava Artificial Lake

The Vltava/Lipno Artificial Lake in the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic, with its 42 km, is the country’s largest lake. As it is located near the Bavarian and Austrian border, the region is also favoured among German speaking vacationers. The enormous lake borders on the “natural paradise” of the Bohemian Forest, thus offering an attractive opportunity to experience the pristine nature of this unique region.
