With its 6000 km2, the Bavarian Forest National Park is the largest contiguous forested area in Central Europe, thereby creating ample space for nature to develop freely. The area is economically no longer significant; humans are nothing but interested observers. More than 200 km of marked hiking trails take you from the valleys to the summits of Rachel and Lusen. You can study various kinds of forest habitats adapted to different climates with their specific floras and faunas: from pasture spruce forests, to mixed mountain forests, up to mountain spruce forests. In a several hour stroll through the woods, visitors at the Bavarian Forest open-air animal park can observe local animals, such as river otters, brown owls, wild cats, lynxes, eagle owls, wolves, or brown bears, in expansive enclosures or aviaries; thereby, becoming acquainted with their behaviour and their relevance for the ecological balance of the mountain forests. Moreover, well-groomed cycling trails invite you to take biking tours throughout the national park.
